Alberto Breccia

A couple of weeks ago we were celebrating Cartoonist Day. The nice people from alberto-breccia.net wrote us some lines about our post and we chose to visit their site, where we found this little marvel. It is a documentary about the man himself, in English.

It is great to see it in this language and to be able to share the art of this genius with people that might not be familiar with him.

Via: Alberto-Breccia.net, of course.

  1. This video is amazing, I didn't even know about its existance! You, guys at Okam, keep circulating the tapes.

Breccia was surprisingly talkative this time, the old man was not quite into chitchat. He was a hardened and lonely visionary, in a time when people thought that graphic narrative was something for children and the Sunday paper, and paid accordingly. If he had put his skills in painting, he probably would be known all over the world and make a shitload of money, but he choosed to dignify the genre he loved so deeply rather to dedicate himself to a "prestigious" medium.

And, more incredible: he had no formal education! He was just a blue collar slaughterhouse worker, with a vision and some serious balls. No wonder he turned to be no academic and confronted the white page like a butcher... but one possessed by the gods. I still read his 50's comics and can't believe his work, and forty years later he was still avant-garde in his eighties!

Glory for him, and for Argentinean comics. Breccia, you were the MAN.
